My buddy Gus and I have been haunting the local junkyard and scrap yard for the last few years.
I am in construction, and he rebuilds old cars, so we are both constantly searching for old parts we can reuse.
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and I can tell you that is 100% true. Gus and I have both found incredible things amidst all the junk, things we have been able to convert in money! When a 1994 Buick Skylark needs a new alternator, Gus can probably suss one out if you give him enough time, just by harvesting it from a junked car. The greatest treasure I ever found at the scrap yard was a two-ton load of rebar rods and double loop wire ties. In my day-to-day life I have never once had the need for double loop wire ties, and rebar is so heavy I’d never think about using it for construction. But I was well aware that these building materials had tremendous value to the right person! I started calling around local contractors, asking how much they would be willing to pay for several thousand American made double loop wire ties. I had eight thousand dollars worth of bar ties and forming wire, and I was happy to sell it for half that price. You better believe the contractor thought he got the bargain of a lifetime, too! When it was all said and done and all the rebar, wire ties, and other accessories had been sold, I turned a profit of eighteen thousand bucks!
