I am an IT specialist, with a focus on social media and digital marketing.
Recently I landed a job with a construction company which is unlike anything else I’ve ever done.
The guys who run this company are very nice, but very old men who are stuck in a previous era. Neither of the brothers who own the company even own a computer, although their secretaries do. Because of their mindset, their company has slowly been losing money over the last few years. They brought me in to see if I could help them – and I did, just not in the way they expected. For example, they had an entire warehouse of building supplies that was going to waste, including tens of thousands of dollars worth of rebar rods and bar ties. Their idea of trying to sell this inventory was to post a sign near the road, they had never even considered posting about it online. I will admit to not knowing anything about rebar rods or bar ties, but that wasn’t as important as knowing how to use the system. Within three hours I had gotten commitments from people in other states to purchase the rebar rods and double loop wire ties, with leads on several other majors sales. This was thousands of dollars worth of sales of rebar, bar wire, and more, just because I knew how to use Craigslist and message boards. Instead of asking for an hourly wage, I want a percentage of the sales I make, because it turns out the bar wire and double loop wire ties are in very high demand
