A surprise on vacation

I had to stop in my tracks and call the office immediately, because we were sitting on a huge load of forming wire, bar wire, and rebar rods that we could not seem to sell.

When you run your own business, you never really have a day off, not entirely. Even on vacation I might have to take an important phone call, or spend an hour working on a spreadsheet in the hotel lobby. There is no other way to handle it, even if it does get inconvenient at times. A few weeks ago I took my wife to the shore for an impromptu vacation. We rented an amazing little bungalow right on the water, and were just going to chill out and have fun for a few days. While we were strolling through the downtown area, I stumbled across a construction sight that had a sign posted about having a dire need for rebar rods and double loop wire ties. I had to stop in my tracks and call the office immediately, because we were sitting on a huge load of forming wire, bar wire, and rebar rods that we could not seem to sell. After getting an accurate inventory I went into this business and gave them an informal pitch. I told them how much forming wire we had, how many thousands of rebar rods we could sell to them, and I saw their eyes lighting up! There was a fair bit of negotiation, because he was willing to pay a premium for the double loop wire ties and the forming wire, but he was less interested in the rebar rods. I knew he was bluffing, and he needed the rebar rods more than anything else, so I stood my ground and got top dollar.
